An Ocean of Flavors requested a contribution of $100,000 in exchange for 25% of the company. An article by Jean-Philippe Thibault published in Gaspésie Nouvelles . Entrepreneur Antoine Nicolas convinced Steve Morency (Yuzu sushi) and Marie-Josée Richer (PRANA) to join him in the adventure of harvesting and selling seaweed.
Last night on Radio-Canada's popular show Dans l'œil du dragon , the man behind Un Océan de saveurs asked for a $100,000 contribution in exchange for 25% of his company, which was accepted without negotiation from the two dragons. Practically a "perfect match," to borrow the words of another popular show. On the one hand, sushi means seaweed. On the other hand, PRANA has been a leader in the organic industry for 15 years and is Canada's No. 1 organic snack brand. With the nutritional benefits of seaweed, the two could well fit together. The day after the show aired, which was filmed on February 18, the man behind Un Océan de saveurs said he was happy with this outcome, especially since he had tried it in 2018, without being retained on screen.
" There was definitely some stress, and I think it showed a bit on camera ," laughs Antoine Nicolas. "I didn't know what to expect, but it was really the best I could have dreamed of, seeing Steve and Marie-Josée on board. "
Last year, Dans l'œil du dragon was viewed by an average of 691,000 people per episode. In addition to the financial support, the visibility and expertise provided are undeniable. " The money itself is a plus, but it's especially the mentorship and the perspective of the dragons that can be interesting. The support, their knowledge, and their network are much more valuable than the monetary contribution. Their experience in the field is worth its weight in gold ," analyzes Antoine Nicolas.
With the requested amount, the latter hopes to quadruple the surface area of his building, modernize it, and repatriate the seaweed processing, which is currently done externally. The production volume will also be quadrupled. This new contribution will allow Un Océan de saveurs to move up a gear. The company, which is located in Cap-aux-Os (Gaspé), already sells its products to 150 restaurants and has approximately 200 points of sale. Sales were $150,000 last year, and this sales volume was reached after only 3 months this year. " We really think you have a great product, a great story to tell, and together, we can each bring strength, contacts, ideas, ways to market and make your brand explode. The potential is there, and we believe in it ," Steve Morency explained on air.
Due to the pandemic, restaurant sales have obviously declined, but the company's transactional website has managed to offset some of the losses. That said, since filming began in February, the two dragons and Antoine Nicolas have had a few discussions, but not as many as hoped for obvious reasons. This is only a postponement and at the very least a step in the right direction for the future. " Even if it's just a pat on the back, it's a great recognition of the work accomplished over the past eight years, " concludes Antoine Nicolas.
